The need for HerStory has become more necessary than ever when considering the blatant misogyny displayed in the recent Presidential election. Throughout history, woman have played paramount roles without recognition. Judy Chicago celebrated such women in her hugely successful exhibition with her 39 elaborate place settings that is on permanent display at the Brooklyn Museum.
In doing my research on this project, I was amazed at how many heroic and influential women I had never heard of before.
Did you know that Sybil Ludington was said to have single-handedly made an all-night horse ride 1777 to warn that the British were coming after the raid in Danbury, Connecticut? Or that Rosalind Franklin was actually the person who actually obtained the images of DNA but was not given due credit that went to Francis Crick, Maurice Wilkins, and James Watson who received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine? Countless examples such as these abound, and the need for women to get recognition for their accomplishments remains as paramount today as ever.
I consider this an ongoing theme and acknowledge the importance of acknowledging our unsung heroines. A portion of the sales of these paintings goes to an organization that allows girls and women to make personal choices so they may pursue their ambitions--Planned Parenthood.
