As a life-long dancer, I have attempted to capture the joy and energy of dance in my paintings. Dance is a universal language that, like art, can connect people of different cultures and perhaps build a humanistic bridge. One day when I was going on vacation to Penang, Malaysia, I had to transfer planes in the Kuala Lumpur Airport. I heard music and followed it to a group of dancing women. As I watched, one waved me into the dance. I'm fortunate to have trusted another woman with my cell phone so that I have the moment captured.
The Energy of Dance is both powerful and contagious. It can produce endorphins which provide positivity so that we can stay healthy to move forward in the world as Peaceful Warriors. Nia has been my primary inspiration in dance and I have attempted to capture this passion on canvas. To quote Debra Rosas, one of the founders of Nia, "Through movement we find health." I've also been an avid fan of the Alvin Alley Dance Company and have followed them for several decades. Included in the Dancer series are tributes to the company, especially to the signature piece Alley created, "Revelations".
Because I equate dance with health, a portion of the sales from the Dance series will go to the American Heart Association.
